At least 64 Dead in Rio's Biggest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the organized crime group in the Brazilian city's northern suburbs - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's records.
Four security agents were included in the fatalities during the security mission in the neighborhoods of Alemão and Penha, state officials said. More than 80 people were arrested.
Intense confrontations broke out when about 2,500 law enforcement officers initiated the operation on Tuesday early hours. The Comando Vermelho countered with armed resistance, setting fire to barriers and dropping bombs from drones, authorities stated.
