A trio of officers lost their lives and at least 15 others were hurt in a seemingly deliberate detonation from gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation took place as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the residence near Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

A man and a woman were arrested at the site and another man who fled after the incident was found shortly later. The trio have been taken to the hospital.

The blast could be heard as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the area displayed the building reduced to a heap of debris.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the three siblings in the past.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto area, Luca Zaia, stated the farmhouse was subject to an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been sent to engage the family members who had locked themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents set off the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” regional commander the police commander stated to news outlets.

A gas canister had been set off, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he explained.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the property, the interior minister confirmed.

Casualties and Damage

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.

According to the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.

He thought the blast had happened on a story above the doorway and stated to reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, adding that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Defence Minister the Defence Minister united with other government officials in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
