Bluefin Fish Fetches Record Price of $3.2 million at Tokyo Auction
A bulky bluefin tuna created waves at the Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a historic bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the calendar year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish came from the operator of a well-known sushi restaurant group, which manages outlets throughout Japan and internationally.
"The first tuna heralds fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a notable participant at the traditional first sale.
Referred to as the King of Tuna, this entrepreneur is noted for making high bids for bluefin tuna at these auspicious January auctions.
Bidding Shock and Record-Setting Precedent
Following the auction, the winner told journalists that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to buy it a little cheaper, but the price soared in no time."
This new acquisition tops his own historic purchases:
- He secured a tuna for 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
- He spent 155 million yen in 2013.
- In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Even after once commenting that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record once again.
An Annual Spectacle of High Prices
The inaugural auction at the Tokyo fish market is traditionally characterized by exorbitant prices. In the prior year, the first tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its locations throughout the country.
The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Swift Service
The record-priced tuna was shortly thereafter prepared for diners at the bidder's sushi establishments shortly after the auction was finished.
"I believe like I've commenced the year in a positive way after eating something so auspicious as the year gets underway," remarked one elated patron.
