The nation's Officials Admonish Donald Trump Not to Cross a Major 'Limit' Concerning Protest Involvement Threats

The former president has warned of involvement in Iran if its government harm protesters, prompting warnings from Iran's leadership that any involvement from Washington would overstep a definitive limit.

A Public Declaration Ignites Diplomatic Strain

Through a public declaration on recently, the former president declared that if the country were to use deadly force against demonstrators, the US would “come to their rescue”. He added, “our response is imminent,” without explaining what that would involve in practice.

Protests Continue into the New Week Against a Backdrop of Financial Turmoil

Protests in Iran are now in their latest phase, representing the largest in several years. The current unrest were triggered by an steep fall in the national currency on Sunday, with its value dropping to about 1.4m to the US dollar, worsening an precarious economic situation.

Multiple individuals have been confirmed dead, including a volunteer for the Basij security force. Footage circulate showing officials carrying firearms, with the audio of gunfire present in the background.

Tehran's Officials Issue Firm Warnings

In response to Trump’s threat, an official, adviser to the supreme leader, stated that Iran’s national security were a “non-negotiable limit, not material for adventurist tweets”.

“Any foreign interference targeting our national security on false pretenses will be severed with a forceful retaliation,” the official said.

Another senior Iranian official, Ali Larijani, accused the US and Israel of being involved in the demonstrations, a frequent accusation by officials in response to protests.

“Washington needs to know that US intervention in this internal issue will lead to destabilisation of the Middle East and the damage to American interests,” he stated. “The American people must know that Trump is the one that began this escalation, and they should be concerned for the safety of their soldiers.”

Background of Tensions and Demonstration Scope

Iran has vowed to strike American soldiers based in the Middle East in the past, and in June it launched strikes on a facility in Qatar following the American attacks on its nuclear facilities.

The ongoing demonstrations have occurred in Tehran but have also extended to other urban centers, such as Isfahan. Business owners have gone on strike in protest, and youth have gathered on university grounds. While financial hardship are the main issue, protesters have also chanted anti-government slogans and condemned what they said was corruption and mismanagement.

Official Approach Changes

The Iranian president, Masoud Pezeshkian, initially invited protest leaders, taking a more conciliatory tone than the government did during the 2022 protests, which were put down harshly. The president said that he had ordered the administration to listen to the demonstrators' core grievances.

The loss of life of demonstrators, however, could signal that officials are taking a harder line against the unrest as they persist. A statement from the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps on Monday cautioned that it would take a harsh line against any external involvement or “internal strife” in the country.

While the government deal with internal challenges, it has attempted to refute accusations from the US that it is reconstituting its atomic ambitions. Iran has claimed that it is no longer enriching uranium anywhere in the country and has indicated it is open for dialogue with the west.
